研究报告摘要:

The major purpose of this study is to compare teaching and learning in American and Chinese university classrooms. Although many research studies have been done on teaching and learning in elementary and secondary schools, few scholars have investigated the effectiveness of teaching and learning in institutions of higher learning. University professors are in general considered experts in their fields of specialization, thus knowing how to teach and guide their students. They tend to be self complacent, and lack motivation and information to improve their teaching even though most would hope to generate more effective learning for their students. What they need is a mirror or a comparative perspective to see the strengths and weaknesses in their current practices, in order to improve teaching and learning in their classrooms.

In the past decade, the China Institute at California State University, Northridge has hosted a large number of university professors from China as visiting scholars in various fields of studies. This has created an excellent opportunity for a comparative study of teaching and learning in the U.S. and China. Towards the end of their study programs, selected visiting scholars participated in a survey/interview study comparing teaching and learning in American and Chinese university classrooms. The theoretical framework and survey instruments have been developed on the basis of the comparative studies on lower level schools designed and directed by the author in the past (Su, 1993, 1994, 1996, 2003, 2004). They cover education goals and emphases, curriculum and course design, teaching strategies and the use of technology, student learning and interaction with faculty, connection between theory and practice or hands-on experiences, course assignment and assessment, and extracurricular activities. This presentation will share some findings from the comparative study on the teaching and learning experiences in American and Chinese university classrooms. Recommendations will be made for improving teaching and learning in higher education both in the U.S. and China.

报告人简介:

苏智欣博士赴美学习与工作之前就读于上海外国语大学和加拿大多伦多大学,并在中国国家教育部外事局任职三年。1989年她在美国华盛顿大学获教育政策和管理学的博士学位之后, 先后在加州大学 (UCLA) 和加州州立大学(CSUN)教育研究生院任教育管理学教授, 自1995年起兼任加州州立大学 (CSUN) 中国所所长, 并于2002至2012年兼任大学国际项目总负责人。她为中国设计并举办了多种类型的长期和短期的政府, 教育, 企业, 卫生等部门领导干部和学者的培训项目, 为促进中美合作与交流做出了贡献, 荣获中国政府“华裔学者春晖奖,”及美国国际学者联合会“国际交流杰出贡献奖。”苏博士积极从事中美教育比较研究, 设计并主持了中美校长培训比较研究、中美师范教育比较研究、中美中学科学教育比较研究、中美小学教学比较研究、中美大学教学比较研究、杜威对中国教育的历史影响的批判性评估、杜威理论在中国师范教育中的实验、美国人看中国教育、中国人看美国教育、中国海归学者及干部的追踪调研、以及在中国学习的美国学生的追踪调研等项目,在国际国内学术杂志和书刊上发表多篇研究论文, 包括联合国教科文的《国际教育论坛》和《教育展望》、中国的《世界教育信息》和《教育学术月刊》、英国的《牛津大学教育论坛》和《比较教育》、美国哥伦比亚大学的《教师学院期刊》、芝加哥大学的《美国教育杂志》、美国的《学校领导人杂志》、《教育与城市社会》,《教育与发展研究杂志》、以及美国教师协会的《师范教育年鉴》。
